It is the 25th Anniversary of the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust,
over the last 25 years the Trust has given out over half a million pounds in
Grants and over £1.7 million in short term interest free loans to help keep
our historic churches and chapels dry and open.

On Saturday 25th October we are holding our AGM followed by a special
anniversary lecture with Jeremy Musson (architectural historian and
presenter of the BBC series ‘Curious House guest’). The lecture is entitled
“ Portraits in Marble – in search of great sculpture in country churches”.

It takes place at 1415 at the Countess Free Church, Chapel Street, Ely. It
is free to enter but a donation to help the Trust would be greatly
appreciated

Many thanks & Best Wishes

25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR

Welcome Message From The Chairman,
Richard Halsey MBE

Welcome to the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches trust website. I am very
honoured to have been appointed as Chairman in the Trust’s 25th anniversary
year. We have decided to celebrate the anniversary with a service of
thanksgiving at St Mary’s church Swaffham Prior on June 8th 2008 and we are
very pleased that the Bishop of Ely will be present. Further details will be
given at the Annual Conference A Passion for Churches at Wolfson College on
April 26th 2008 when we will celebrate the county’s ecclesiastical riches.
This is always a good chance to meet like minded people in a delightful
place and to learn more about Cambridgeshire – so get your booking in
quickly!

This year’s Annual Report will also celebrate the Trust’s success in helping
the historic places of worship of Cambridgeshire, the hugely helpful role
that WREN has so willingly fulfilled and from some individual accounts,
explain the vital role of the Trust in keeping these buildings used. It will
be published at the Annual General Meeting on 25th October 2008, when Jeremy
Musson will be our guest speaker; further details will be posted on this
site when available.

The needs of congregations have changed over the years, so although helping
with repairs remains our priority, Trustees have agreed to offer our own
grants to fund facilities which will give the buildings a future by making
them more useful. This year, we are also offering to help congregations
protect their metal roofs by offering grants of up to 50% of the cost of
applying Smartwater. Please see the Grants pages.

The Trust can only do this with your support, through events like the Ride
and Stride day and the Conference and from expanding our membership. Please
help us by <http://www.cambshistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/join-us.htm>
joining the Trust and so help maintain the ecclesiastical heritage of
Cambridgeshire.

We hope you find this website useful and we look forward to meeting you at
one or all of our events

25th Anniversary Year

The Work of the Trust

Cambridgeshire has more than 300 churches and chapels of historic and
architectural interest. They span over a thousand years from the Saxon
period at Great Paxton to the High Victorian revival at Waresley and All
Saints, Jesus Lane, Cambridge.

In almost every village and town it is the church and the churchyard that
form a visual focus and the longest visual thread. The churchyard may
contain the only substantial trees, areas of ancient grassland and rare
habitats, and the church building is the bastion of the local
distinctiveness of building styles and materials. The limestone spires of
old Huntingdonshire strike an obvious contrast with the chalk and cobble
towers of East Cambridgeshire.

The care of the church sites falls squarely on the local community and
especially its church members. They carry the burden of continuous
maintenance and the raising of massive funds for repair.

That's where we can offer some assistance:

In 1953, the <http://www.historicchurches.org.uk/> Historic Churches
Preservation Trust was founded and became the leading body dedicated to
preserving the nation's churches. Seeing the great need locally, the
Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust was founded in June 1983, by the
original trustees who were Pamela, Lady Wedgewood, the Venerable Richard
Sledge, Robert Walker and the Reverend Robert Van De Weyer.

The Trust's main aim is to provide financial assistance to the parishes of
Cambridgeshire, when they undertake repair projects affecting the fabric,
fixtures, furniture and ornaments of their historic churches and chapels.

To this end the Trust has a policy of making grants and interest free loans
from it's funds to allow repair work to be undertaken without delay and to
provide a cash-flow for larger scale projects.

The Trust's main fund raising event is the Annual Sponsored Cycle Ride,
which takes place in September. The continuing success of this event is
crucial to the amount of funds available to be distributed to the Historic
Churches of Cambridgeshire.

The trust also administers the local distribution of grants on behalf of
<http://www.cambshistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/wren.htm> WREN (Waste Recycling
Environmental Ltd) under object E of the landfill tax credit scheme with
funding resourced from the operations at Landfill sites owned by
<http://www.wren.org.uk/> Waste Recycling Group PLC. These WREN grants are
available to provide funding for the maintenance, repair or restoration of
the Historic Churches of Cambridgeshire.

Best Wishes
