'Freedom Though Discipline'

Some Spiritual Rules for Lent and Beyond

The day will focus on some core spiritual disciplines which, paradoxically, according to the great spiritual writers, are inescapable if we wish to find spiritual freedom.

Alan Hargrave was born in a small terraced house in the middle of Leeds - an area now buried under university and inner city motorway. He trained as a Chemical Engineer before working for ten years with the Anglican Church in South America - first on a development project with indigenous people in northern Argentina, then planting churches in Bolivia. He returned to the UK in 1987 to train for ordained ministry. In 1994 he became the first vicar of Holy Cross, a new parish on a council estate on the edge of Cambridge. In 2004 he became the first 'Canon Missioner' of Ely Cathedral. In 2001 he published 'An Almighty Passion' a book illustrating the great doctrines of God with stories from ordinary life. He is passionate about mission, unity, justice, cricket, golf, narrow boats, his four children, one of whom sadly died of cancer, his two grandchildren, his wife Annie and, of course, the Almighty.
