TOOLKIT

18th October 2008

St. Peter’s Secondary School, St Peter’s Road, Huntingdon.

 

A full day of workshops for Clergy, LLM’s, ALM’s, Youth workers, PCC members
and teachers working with, or wishing to reach new young people in the their
community. Fifteen workshops plus a keynote speaker, and opening/closing
worship with a music group! 

 

Workshop 1:              ‘GLIMPSES’

Explore what spirituality means in the 21st century. Examine how we might
engage with young people’s spirituality in an effective way. This workshop
will be led by Nigel Pimlott of the Frontier Youth Trust.  A brand-new
resource is being unveiled in this workshop. 

 

Workshop 2:      DISCUSSION STARTERS & TEAM BUILDING GAMES

This workshop offers ideas and activities to get your youth group talking
during discussion time, and working together as one team. Why do young
people sit and snigger, or nudge one another when you try to start a
discussion with them? Here are proven ideas to get them talking and working
together as one group.

 

Workshop 3:         YOUNG PEOPLE & ADDICTIONS

Hope UK has many years of experience in working in this field of youth work.
Join them as they explore young people’s addictions, the issues behind the
problem, and how churches might offer support and assistance to those
addicted. All cities, towns and villages have young people that are, or have
been, affected by drug abuse. Everyone who works with young people need to
be aware of the signs and affects of drug abuse in young people.

 

Workshop 4:         BREATHE

This workshop offers you a chance to explore and experience this exciting
new resource equipment for 14-19 year olds. This workshop is inter-active.
Therefore you will need to be able to sit or kneel on the floor. As well as
exploring your own spirituality, you are sure to go around this resource and
get ideas for your own youth group prayer times.

 

Workshop 5:    IDEAS FOR YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS

Further proven ideas, resources and suggestions to get your group meetings
humming and popular with the kids. So many fast and furious ideas that you
will find it difficult to write them down fast enough. If you have ever
found yourself stuck for ideas as they young people are walking through the
door, then this workshop is for you.

 

Workshop 6:    HOW TO DEAL WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR

Do you find some of your young people disrupting your group meetings? 

What are the issues behind such behaviour?  

How do we deal and react to such behaviour? 

 

Workshop 7:  NEW VISUALS FOR TALKS & SERMONS

Stuck for ideas when doing talks for family services? 

Want ideas in how to grab young people’s attention?

Can’t find that one idea to help you with that assembly?

Well, here are some cracking visuals and daring ideas to help congregations
and youth group members to focus on your bible theme.

 

Workshop 8:    SECONDARY SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

So, you've negotiated your way into your Local Secondary School and now
you've got twenty minutes to talk to more teenagers than you would normally
meet in a year! What do you do and how do you do it? Ideas and do's and
don'ts about Collective Worship that will help you get invited back!

 

Workshop 9:  WORKING SAFELY WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

An opportunity to reflect on important safe practice procedures and child
protection issues when working with young people. This workshop is being led
by the Bishop’s child protection adviser, Yvonne Quirk.

 

Workshop 10:       THE ‘STAY OUT OF JAIL’ CARD 

How churches might be able to assist and support young offenders and help
them to avoid the spiral of offending. This workshop will be led by Martin
Kettle,  a chaplain at Whitemoor Prison.

 

Workshop 11:   USING POWERPOINT/VISUAL/SOUND SYSTEMS AT CHURCH

A leading professional audio and visual company, ‘Big Image’ offers advice
on how to use affordable equipment to enhance worship. Here is a chance for
you to question the real experts on your own technical needs at church. If
you have ever struggled with a projector, OHP or Laptop, or fight to erect
the screen whilst your congregation waits for the worship to start, then
this workshop is for you.

 

Workshop 12:   BEYOND WORDS 

Explore multi-sensory prayer and sacred space with Alan Hargrave, Canon
Missioner at Ely Cathedral. This workshop will feature exciting new
resources to help young people focus on prayer. If you have seen the ideas
and visuals used in the Spirituality Zone at ‘Rave in the Nave’ then speak
to the man who came up with all the ideas! 

 

Workshop 13:   TEACHING THE BIBLE TO 11’s-14’s

This workshop offers some ideas and insights into effective ways of teaching
the bible to young people without them squirming in their seats or rushing
to the door. If you have ever struggled with how to handle this part of your
youth group meeting or service, then this workshop is for you.

 

Workshop 14: SPIRITUALITY THROUGH ART & CRAFT

Help young people to express their spirituality or issues of faith, culture
and environmental issues with these fresh art & craft ideas designed and
tested by Carolynn Pritchard, an experienced children’s minister.

 

Workshop 15:  AVOIDING PUNISHMENT – BY GIVING IT OUT.

The workshop will endeavour to highlight some of the difficulties that can
arise for Youth Offending Partnerships and how church congregations could
assist and support these groups and young people at risk in the community. 

 

Keynote Speaker: BOB SPROSON 

Bob has been working as a teacher since 1972, originally in mainstream
schools, but then in institutions providing for young offenders and children
in public care. For the last decade and a half he has managed the provision
of 'Youth Education - Other than at School'.
