Your Week's Religious Viewing and Listening
BROADCASTING BULLETIN
Saturday 24 – 30 September 05

Saturday 24 September

Film: My Son the Fanatic In this study of religious intolerance, class
snobbery and the seeming impossibility of social integration, an immigrant
cab driver’s son becomes involved with a strict Islamic sect.
Bittersweet and topical drama. 10.40pm BBC2

Sunday 25 September

Film: Samson and Delilah This thumping Oscar-winning epic prompted one
critic to suggest that Cecil B DeMille considered God to be his co-director.
Victor Mature stars as the biblical hero, while Hedy Lamarr brings a
gorgeous woodenness to the role of Delilah (so says the Radio Times Film
page). 1.15pm Ch5

The Grail Trail: In Pursuit of the Da Vinci Code A documentary following
three disparate fans of the best-selling novel as they follow in the book’s
footsteps. Initially the book-believers refuse to trust evidence that
counts against Brown’s version. Never mind that it’s a novel, to them it’s
true. Then, via a series of encounters with experts, the mood changes and
gradually the differences between fact and fiction are hammered into them.
Psychologist Raj Persaud presents. 10.35pm ITV1

Monday 26 September

Islam on the South Side In Chicago a young Palestinian-American sociologist
examines the impact that Islam is having on his South Side neighbourhood.
The call to faith is not coming from the minarets and mosques but from hip
hop artists and from the gangs who in some areas control the streets. 11am
R4

Funeral Sentences This feature reflects on the language of death through
the words of some of those who live in the midst of death – gravediggers,
funeral directors, bishops and police officers. 8.30pm R4

Book at Bedtime: Paradise Lost In this late night slot throughout the
week, Milton’s classic begins tonight with an introduction by Philip
Pullman. 10.45pm R4

Monarchy 3/5 The Children of Henry VIII In 1544 Henry VIII’s third Act of
Succession allowed all three of his children to succeed to the throne.
First Edward sought to impose Protestantism and then Mary Catholicism on
their fearful subjects, but both died before accomplishing their missions,
allowing Elizabeth to pursue moderation in religious affairs. 8pm Ch4

Tuesday 27 September

Mastermind The life and career of the 19th century Bishop of Natal, John
William Colenso, heads the list of specialist subjects in this edition.
(Readers of this Bulletin may well recall that the bishop played a part in
bringing about the first Lambeth Conference of 1867). 8pm BBC2

Wednesday 28 September

Afternoon Play: Saint Lucy Repeat of this play about a hospital patient’s
meeting with his cheerful “religious nurse”. 2.15pm R4

Choral Evensong Live from Manchester cathedral. 4pm R3

Thursday 29 September

Hindu Lives 1/3 Krishnan Guru-Murthy follows the personal stories of three
generations of British Hindus to find out how their faith has shaped their
identity, the way they live and the cultural landscape of Britain. 8pm R4

Temple of Bling An examination of Christian hip-hop artists’ efforts to
combat the side of the genre they view as morally corrupt. The programme
follows rappers Corey Red and Precise as they try to disseminate their
Christian message, and visits the church of the former Run DMC star now
known as Reverend Run. 11.10pm Ch4

The Monastery Last of these repeats concludes the journey of 5 men who have
lived in a Sussex monastery for 40 days. 11.20pm BBC2
