Saturday 19 February

Lent Talks    This is a series of monologues for Lent which are inspired by
ideas of temptation.   Saturdays are repeats of the previous Sunday’s
programme.   R4  5.45am


Sunday 20 February

Lent Talks.  The second in this Lent series - Jean Alexander reads Richard
Cameron’s short story “Firestarter”.    R4  5.40pm

Sacred Nation  The six part series which explores Britain’s historically
pluralistic approach to religion and faith.  This edition looks at
Christianity’s arrival in Britain and the contrasting appeal of paganism.
Plus a look at Islamic influences as early as the eighth century.     R2 8pm

The Real Cliff Richard   In a career spanning 45 years Cliff Richard has
transformed himself from sexy British rock’n’roll star to Christian
entertainer and national treasure.  Friends and critics consider his appeal.

Monday 21 February

Dispatches:  Holy Offensive     The BBC’s broadcast of Jerry Springer: The
Opera proved that the battle between advocates of free artistic expression
and those who wish to safeguard their sense of morality or religious
sanctity appears to be intensifying.  In this programme representatives from
both sides of the divide argue the case for and against censorship of the
arts.     Ch4 8pm


Tuesday 22 February

Hungry for Heaven  the first in a two part series in which Simon Mayo
explores the impact of religious music and ideas on the music of the rock
and pop era.    Today he looks at the influence of the church and gospel
singing on the early rockers and soul pioneers.  Contributors include Carl
Perkins, Little Richard and the Jordanaires.     R2 8.30pm


Wednesday 23 February

Beverley’s Gospel Nights   A return for this gospel series which tonight
includes Mavis Staples and the London Community Gospel Choir.   Mavis talks
about her family’s visit to Martin Luther King’s church.  R2 9pm


Thursday 24 February

Crooks in the Cloisters. Film comedy about a gang of crooks on the run who
are forced to adjust their lifestyle when they take refuge in a Cornish
island monastery.  Stars Barbara Windsor and Ronald Fraser.  Ch4 12.30pm

Afternoon Play: Baldi   2/6 in this series of plays concerning a mystery
solving priest.    R4   2.15pm

The Real Exorcist  An account of the real events behind the classic horror
film “The Exorcist”.  The roots of the story - in the only publicly
documented Catholic exorcism in US history - are explored here.
Ch4 l0pm

The Exorcism.  Krishnan Guru-Murthy presents an investigation into the
practice of exorcism.  An experienced minister will perform the rites, while
the brain activity of the subject is monitored using cutting-edge
technology.  A group of leading scientists and theologians will discuss the
results.  Ch4 11.05pm

Are Muslims Hated?  Kenan Malik challenges the idea that Britain is rife
with Islamophobia.  Ch4 2.40am (Friday morning)
