Thursday 4 August
Devout Sceptics   3/6  Bel Mooney’s guest is the children’s author Dick King
Smith, the writer of Babe, as they discuss the territory between belief and

A Seaside Parish     This series receives a repeat showing.  Today: the
villagers decide to reassess their lives, following the flood.  7.30pm BBC2

This week, Radio Times announces a Carol Competition launched by Radio 4 and
St Martin in the Fields.  The competition – to compose a piece of choral
music to words written by the clergy of St Martin’s – is open to people of
all ages with experience of composing for voices or choirs.

Saturday 6 August
Dalziel and Pascoe: Sins of the Fathers  The death of a young priest is
investigated in this repeat, first shown in 2002.    9.55pm BBC1

Sunday 7 August
Essentials of Faith  A look at Buddhism in this late night series.  12.40
(Monday)  ITV1.

Monday 8 August
Afternoon Play:  A commission for a commemorative window saves a glasswright
from ruin    2.15pm  R4

Dispatches  Why Bomb London?  A thought-provoking documentary examining the
many forces that may have combined to make the recent bomb attacks more
likely. Did a series of UK foreign policy decision contribute?  Were
divisions within the British Muslim community also key as to why the events
of July took place?  8.00pm Ch4

Tuesday 9 August
The Naked Pilgrim: the Road to Santiago  A repeat showing for this series in
which Brian Sewell travels one of Christendom’s most famous medieval
pilgrimages.  7.15pm Ch5

Sad to be Gay    David Ainsanya hates being gay.  He has lived as a gay man
for 20 years but wants to see if it’s possible to “go straight”.   So he
sets off for Tennessee to join an “ex-gay-ministry” run by fundamentalist
Christians.    9pm BBC2

Wednesday 10 August
The Old Bill    In a week long series looking at the historian’s tool of old
bills and invoices, today’s programme takes a look at the churchwardens’
accounts from Prescot in Lancashire, which reflect the turbulent changes
from Henry V11’s break with Rome to Cromwell’s Commonwealth.  3.45pm  R4
