You may also like to know that the Ely Sinfonia orchestra will be playing a
concert called "A Voyage from Spain to the New World"
in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 3rd March, at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £15, 12, 10 and £5 (unreserved).

Ely audiences to relive the excitement of the 2006 BBC Young Musician Of The
Year competition.

17-year-old David Massey to join Ely Sinfonia to play guitar concerto from
BBC final in concert of Spanish and American music in Ely Cathedral.

Music lovers in Ely will be given a taster of last year’s BBC Young Musician
of the Year competition when David Massey, the 17-year-old guitar virtuoso,
joins Ely Sinfonia to perform the piece he played in the final, Joachin
Rodrigo’s celebrated Fantasia para un Gentilhombre guitar concerto as part
of a concert with a Spanish and American theme in Ely Cathedral on Saturday
March 3rd 2007.

Ely Sinfonia has performed with a number of well-known soloists, including
past Young Musician of the Year competitors, but this is the first time that
the orchestra will play host to such a recent finalist. David was the first
guitarist to reach the finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year since
Paul Galbraith in 1982, and only the third guitarist semi-finalist ever. He
received an ovation at last year’s competition for his rendering of Fantasia
para un Gentilhombre, as well as over 21% of the public vote.

“This promises to be our most exciting concert yet,” says Ely Sinfonia
manager Robin Moore. “We are delighted to be bringing a young musician of
such talent to Ely: it will be a fantastic experience for our musicians, the
majority of whom are amateurs and keen learners, and it will be a superb
opportunity for local audiences to hear one of Britain’s up-and-coming
artists”.

In addition to Fantasia para un Gentilhombre, the concert, entitled “A
voyage from Spain to the New World”, will feature two equally well-known and
exciting pieces, Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Chabrier’s Espana, The New
World Symphony encapsulates the essence of 19th century American music,
while Chabrier’s Espana, typifies the exhiliaration and passion of life in
Spain at the same period. Every audience member will be guaranteed a good
view of the soloist and orchestra: nave seats, which normally have a
restricted view, will be able to see the action via wide-screen TVs.
