New Advisor Confidential Counselling Appointed

The Revd Bruce Kinsey (48) has been appointed as Bishop's Advisor on Confidential Counselling. He succeeds the Revd Canon Dr Fraser Watts and will take up the new post on 1st March 2009.

Bruce Kinsey trained for the priesthood at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford and served in the Diocese of London before becoming Chaplain of Downing College, Cambridge in 1991.

In 2000, he was appointed as Chaplain and Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Perse School in Cambridge.

His interest in counselling as an aspect of priestly ministry began when he undertook chaplaincy work at HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs. He went on to complete the Cambridge University Counselling Service's Advanced Diploma in Counselling and following this, became a tutor on the course (1999-2005).

In 2003, he completed the training and registration process as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). He was chair of the Psychoanalytic Section of the UKCP from 2006-2008 and continues to serve on its executive.

Since 2000, Bruce Kinsey has been in private practice as a therapist in addition to his role at the Perse School.

He keeps up an interest in contemporary art, enjoys gardening and is a former rower, rugby player and athlete.

In welcoming his appointment, the Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell, also paid tribute to Fraser Watts: "He has developed an efficient, professional, discreet and much valued counselling service for the Diocese in the five years during which he has been responsible for this work."
