As you may have heard, Bishop Anthony will be launching his 2005 Lent Appeal
early next year to assist with the vital medical and support work being
undertaken in our South Indian link diocese, Vellore.

Leprosy is still a frightening reality in South India, but now a growing
number of people are living with HIV/AIDS – a major problem and just one
more burden on the region’s scarce medical resources. The diocese of
Vellore is in the state of Tamil Nadu, where over 37,000 cases were
diagnosed last year.

As parishes plan their Lent programme, we are asking you to consider your
overseas giving and lend support to this urgent appeal.
In a country where there is considerable ignorance, the Diocese of Vellore
is taking the lead by supporting families affected by AIDS, running an
orphanage for children whose parents have died from the virus and staging
crucial AIDS awareness programmes.

The Anglican Bishop in Vellore, Bishop Y William, visited Ely diocese
earlier this autumn to outline some of the vital support work his diocese is
undertaking.

Appeal literature will be available in the New Year, articles will appear in
the Ely Ensign and the Lent Course for 2005, “Together in Mission”, will
include sections on the medical, educational and prevention work in Vellore.
