Parish of St. Mary the Virgin, Linton

Mission and Social Concern

As a Church, we take our responsibility for corporate stewardship seriously, and donate 10% of our income to charities. In particular, we support the work of USPG: Anglicans in World Mission , as well as local charities and our own Youth Worker. Each year, together with our brothers and sisters from Linton Free Church, we take part in the annual street collection for Christian Aid , and from time to time respond to special appeals by Christian Aid. Some members of the congregation keep collection boxes for the Children's Society , and the contents of these are added to the collection for the Children's Society taken at the annual Christingle Service in December.

Lent Lunches have been held since 2000. Seven lunches are held each Wednesday in Lent, with soup, bread, cheese and coffee being available between 12 noon and 2 pm in homes around the parish. The lunches are open to all and donations support the work of organisations such as The Barnabas Fund, Christian Aid and Children in Distress (in Romania).

A Peace and Justice Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in February, May and November, and the 3rd Wednesday in September. Around 30 people gather for fellowship over a meal at a local venue, followed by a speaker and question time. Former speakers have included the Sir David Ramsbotham, former Chief Inspector of Prisons, Louise Pirouet, who spoke about asylum seekers and Bruce Kent and Valerie Flessati whose subject was 'Current issues in the peace movement'.
