Sunday School
St Johns aims to be very welcoming to families, and young people will find a particularly warm welcome in our Sunday School. We have a membership that is typically around 40–50 members, who work in four age groups.
Sunday School takes place during the main 10 am service, although children are encouraged to arrive from 9:50am for some great activities before our worship begins at 10am. We start together for a short introduction, which includes singing a couple of worship songs. Most of the time is then within smaller groups that are broadly in line with school ages (pre-school and reception, infant, junior and senior). We join the main church at the Peace before Communion, and remain in the church until after we have either received the sacrament or a blessing. St Johns particularly welcomes children to receive the sacrament before they have been confirmed.
Our small groups use the Scripture Union's Light resources, which help each group have a good mix of fun activities and learning about our faith from the Bible each Sunday. We also aim for a diversity of topics and themes, which will include story-based themes from both Old and New Testaments (such as Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Kings and Prophets from the Old Testament, and events from the lives of Jesus and Paul from the New Testament), and experience-based themes (such as prayer, relationships, the church and mission). Over time we revisit these themes, so that our young people can learn bit-by-bit as they grown older. For example, the walls of Jericho might come tumbling down as an action game when they are 5 years old, but the deeper issues of trusting God shown by Joshua will be discussed at a personal level when they are 15.
A highlight of our year in Sunday School is that we perform a nativity play in the Christmas morning family service. Many of our families remain in Cambridge over Christmas, which means that we always have a good number of children able to take part. It is always very exciting for our young people to take part in.
Music is also very important, and we encourage our young musicians to be part of our music band that plays in the monthly family services, as well as at Christmas.
For more written details, we have two downloadable documents:
- Download the Sunday School policy document (pdf format). Print this on two sides of an A4 sheet of paper to get the document in folded A5 brochure format.
- Download our policy on Communion prior to Confirmation (pdf format).
We also make our Christmas Nativity plays available free for download.
