The Churchyard

In the churchyard is a table-tomb supposed to contain the remains of the teenage 2nd and 3rd Dukes of Suffolk, uncles of Lady Jane Grey, who came to Buckden to escape the plague, but died of it on 14 July 1551 within 30 minutes of each other. The younger brother thereby earning a place in the record books for having held the shortest peerage known. The churchyard also contains a headstone carved with skull and hourglass dated 1708 - 9; a headstone dated 1671 or 1691; a headstone with hourglass, crossbones and roses of 1680 - 1 and many 18th century headstones and monuments.
