Visit Vellore Church of South India 14th - 31st January 2012 in the company of Rev Graham Thompson Chair, Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council and Chairman, East Anglia District (Methodist Church) and Janet Scott Chair of the Vellore Link Support Group and Society of Friends.

A chance to

  • meet the Christian sisters and brothers with whom we are linked
  • experience Christianity in a totally different context
  • see the India that Indians live
  • visit projects working to share God’s good news amongst the people of the diocese of Vellore • sightsee in this part of India
  • be part of the renewal of the covenant between Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council and the Diocese of Vellore

The diocese of Vellore is in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It centres on the town of Vellore, west of Chennai (Madras). The diocese is part of the Church of South India, a united church since 1947, made up from the A n g l i c a n , M e t h o d i s t , Presbyterian and Congregational churches.

Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council ( and through that, all the major denominations in Cambridgeshire) have been linked with the Diocese of Vellore since 1992. In 1998, a covenant was signed between the two groups of Christians. In this we promise

  • to pray for one another,
  • to work together to strengthen the links of Christian fellowship
  • to exchange ideas and learn from each other’s Christian experience
  • to give mutual support and encouragement to one another

This covenant is due to be renewed in January 2012 .

What will it cost?

Financially The trip will cost £1300 (based on shared rooms. Single rooms cannot be guaranteed throughout the trip) This will cover the cost of air fares, all accommodation and transport whilst in India, and transport to and from Heathrow airport. In addition you will need to pay for travel insurance and visas for India, and any inoculations that you will need.

In addition Participants need to commit to 3 evenings of preparation for the trip, to be held during the autumn 2011. It is hoped that all participants will be prepared to talk to groups in their area about their experiences and further the work of the link

And finally the encounter with Christians living out their faith in a totally different culture may affect the way you live the rest of your life……...
