Archbishop praises work at Littlehey Prison
21st November 2009The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has paid tribute to volunteers and prison staff at HM Prison Littlehey. During his visit this weekend (Saturday 21 November) he met staff, inmates and members of the Prison Chaplaincy team. The Archbishop spoke with some of the prisoners and their families at the Visitors Centre. He also went on to the prison Chapel where he met the chaplains and some of the volunteers in their team. Dr Sentamu, who has served as a Prison Chaplain at a Remand Centre, said: "I am grateful for the work of the chaplaincy team, the prison visitors, the Mothers' Union members and the prison staff. I thank God for all those who are working to make sure that prisoners are given hope, so they can make positive changes for a better future." Littlehey is classified as Category C, the lowest risk closed prison and currently houses 711 inmates. A new unit for 480 young offenders will be opened in January 2010. The Archbishops remarks came during his two-day visit to the Diocese of Ely. During 2009, Churches in Cambridgeshire have been celebrating the 900th year of the Diocese. local parishes have been marking the remarkable history of the Diocese with a programme of outstanding events. The celebrations came to a close this weekend and Dr Sentamu commissioned Church members to move forward in mission at a special service held in Ely Cathedral.
