Heritage Open Days
Every year Heritage Open Days give the public the chance to investigate their local heritage and to learn a little more about their community’s history – and that includes the parish church. The 900th anniversary of our Diocese is a great opportunity to explain your church building, link it into the history of the Diocese and to explain that it still serves God and its community as much as it ever did – just differently!
Heritage Open Days this year are September 10-13th and Saturday 12th September is national Ride and Stride day for the county Historic Churches Trusts. Participate for as long as you want by having a display or a guided tour, organising a talk or bell ringing demonstration, opening up the tower or even the vestry to show your ‘treasures’. There is bound to be a willing local historian (or in newer churches someone with a long memory) who could help and you might join forces with a nearby Heritage Open Day participant.
Look at www.heritageopendays.org.uk for ideas and to register (by August 1st) if you wish, or contact your local civic society or Council conservation officer.
