Who does what to promote Christian Giving within the parish

  • The PCC decides the policy to be adopted and how often a Renewal Programme shall take place in the parish. Annual Renewal is recommended for the following major reasons

    • It is important enough within the Christian Mission to warrant this
    • It is simple and allows parishes to do it on their own.

  • The PCC may decide to do this in conjunction with a Parish Conference or ‘away day’, to establish the Vision of the parish, in line with their Mission Action Planning.

  • Stewardship teaching. The Priest or Reader explains the Biblical and theological reasons why Christians give back to God a token part of their income, in thanks for his love and generosity. This may also be done in house groups rather than as a sermon or series of sermons.

  • This teaching should be timed to take place at or near the date established for Annual Renewal.

  • The PCC may appoint a Parish Giving Adviser not only to run Annual Renewals, but also to co-ordinate Stewardship Teaching, explain the theology of Stewardship, and promote Stewardship with the congregation. He or she will also work in conjunction with the Treasurer and Gift Aid Officer to ensure both that pledges are given by the congregation and that they are honoured.

Alternatively this function may be performed by a Committee.

  • The clergy should acknowledge that they have a part to play in leading Annual Renewal and Teaching, and be prepared themselves to conduct their own personal Giving appraisal. This will give them more confidence when telling others to do it.

  • It is essential that clergy and lay work together to ensure that Stewardship is properly understood, and where a committee is appointed, all parties are represented.

  • More information on the exact method of carrying out an Annual Renewal can be found in the page entitled Annual Renewal.
