As the Ely Chair of WATCH I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to this email list which is now in existence for those who would like to forward the AIMS of WATCH which are nationally spelt out as threefold
* the appointment of women at all levels in the Church
* honesty and openness in all appointments
* support for women in lay and ordained ministries, and for all those who suffer because of their advocacy of women's ministries.
Locally Ely Watch has instigated a series of conversations between Methodist and Anglican women particularly around the questions of the particular challenges posed for women in their ministry by the organisations in which they work, and the interesting question arising out of the different meaning given to Episcopacy and leadership in the two denominations. If you are interested to join in this particular conversation do join the list where the issues raised in this conversation and suggestions for creating your own conversational circle in your deanery/region will be raised. For more information you could also go to http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/watchconversation - sign in....and join in what will hopefully grow into a nationwide conversation amongst women in the two denominations.
Ely Watch would also like to focus in 2002-2003 discussions around employment legislation over the next year -- so if this is of interest do come on board.
We would also like to see the formation of a monthly or bi monthly reading group which could meet around the diocese for those who would like to keep their theological/gender aware rainbow cells alive and also meet others engaged in living through ministry in the church as women if there is sufficient interest and a convenor to emerge for this.
Ely WATCH list offers you the opportunity -- at virtually no cost to the administrator or yourselves -- to keep in touch with the network and to develop the shape of thinking and advocacy in the diocese for genuinely wholistic ministry at every level in the Church of England -- Do log onto www.watchwomen.com to get more of the background of WATCH's National life and work.
The function of this list is primarily communication and support. Traffic should not be heavy, an no flaming or spamming is permitted. Creativity, kindness and support is positively encouraged! Your virtual fellowship, co-partnership, and improved mutual communication through your membership of the list is welcomed -- and the creation of a programme of activity and thoughtful interaction for the coming year 2003 which this list will facilitate eagerly anticipated. All of us have our own loads to carry, together we can build our commitment for change, share our various beacons of excellent practice, and bon mots of encouragement. The list is a supplement -- not a replication of the diocesan ELY LIST, which is for general business for the Diocese, and is not the mode for sharing internal business of a campaigning and advocacy group which is how WATCH situates itself within church polity and life.
Ely WATCH welcomes lay and ordained members of the Church of England, and as we develop our common life is open to men as well as women, though this discussion and information list is for women only, as there may be some discussion which needs to be had in a women-only forum in the first instance. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this on the list -- as we then move onto a list for men and women who support the aims and objectives of WATCH.
Issues to raise on the list and information to share are anything which is important to list members on the issues of equality and support for women's ministry at every level within the church, lay or ordained, public or domestic, in urban, rural, or small town guise. The list offers you some safe space to let off steam, and rant occasionally as long as others can be offered space to respond creatively and supportively -- new initiatives for the formation of our ministry alongside men for the sake of the whole gospel and our wider community really welcomed.
If you have any women friends who you would like to see added to this list, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for them to be invited. For the list to be able to function as a helpful forum for sharing at present it is a list at present by invitation only -- I hope that this is acceptable as we move forward together. Comments on list on this would be most welcome!
We would also like to build our mailing list for those concerned about the equality of ministry which is represented in WATCH's manifest -- men and women are part of the whole ministry of Christ -- so names to email@example.com please for names of those to go on a mailing list for events -- thank you.
Thank you for your attention -- looking forward to your participation -- this list is as good as its membership and what you make of it.
Revd Dr Carrie Pemberton
