Fairtrade
Percentage of 50% threshold of parishes needed to be Fairtrade before the Diocese can qualify as a whole
Diocese aims to be a Fairtrade Diocese during 2009
The Diocese of Ely is aiming to become a Fairtrade Diocese during 2009. This will be achieved when at least 50% of the parishes in the Diocese have applied for Fairtrade Status.
Watch our progress on the thermometer here and why not join in and apply for Fairtrade status in your parish. You need to apply for Fairtrade status, if your parish is to count, even if you are already meeting the Fairtrade commitments (see below)
How to become a Fairtrade church
- Download the Fairtrade Church Application Form. Please complete one form per church/parish.
- Discuss it and decide at your next PCC meeting. The three commitments you need to make are shown on the application form. Email the Diocesan Fairtrade co-ordinators Pauline and Ben Jupp with any queries - )
- Either
- complete the downloaded application form electronically (it's an MS Word document) and email it as an attachment to Pauline and Ben
- print the downloaded application form to complete on paper and then post it to Pauline and Ben Jupp at 37b Mill Corner, Soham, CB7 5HT
- Thank you! Pauline and Ben will do the rest!
Suppliers of Fairtrade tea, coffee and other supplies
If you already have a wholesale supplier, initially ask for Fairtrade supplies - because of the increase in demand for Fairtrade many suppliers are likely to be able to respond positively. If not there are a number of wholesalers available. See the Fairtrade Foundation website for a directory of wholesalers – click on Catering Products and then East & South-East England.
Traidcraft
Traidcraft, one of the first Fairtrade wholesalers, has recently extended its small order wholesale facility, to churches. If you don’t have a Fairtrade supplier at the moment (or even if you do) we recommend this Traidcraft facility.
For information go to their website, or telephone 0870 444 1543 if you have any queries. You can browse their full catalogue online or order a printed copy.
In an emergency of course all major supermarkets and many smaller outlets, including most Oxfam shops, now stock Fairtrade products e.g. tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits at competitive prices – look for the Fairtrade logo. Our research shows that Fairtrade products are not normally more expensive and quite often cheaper than their non Fairtrade counterparts.
Fairtrade Communion Wine
Fairtrade Communion Wine has been introduced this year and is available from Whitebridge Wines, Unit 21, Whitebridge Estate, Stone, Staffs, ST15 8LQ or from their website.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2009
ELY FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT EVENT 2009 was attended by the Mayor of Ely, Town Crier, local Member of Parliament, Cathedral clergy and Fairtrade Foundation representative. The event included a Fairtrade Banana walk through the City to the Cathedral Centre for a varied programme including Fairtrade Cooking Demo, Fairtrade wine tasting, talks, films, Fairtrade cafe and stalls, etc.

Visit by Gerado Arias Camacho and CDs to borrow
During Fairtrade Fortnight 2008 Gerardo Arias Camacho, a Costa Rican coffee farmer and a Fairtrade producer, visited Ely as part of our Fairtrade Fortnight event. You can see photos from the day here.
We have a few CDs available on a first come first serve basis in which he movingly describes his life as a farmer before and after involvement with Fairtrade. Or you can view/download the video here but it is a 97MB wmv file so may take some time to download.
Useful reading
Two best books:
- 50 Reasons to buy Fairtrade: Miles Litvinoff and John Madeley. £7.99
- Fighting the Banana Wars and other Fairtrade Battles: Harriet Lamb. £10.99
There are many excellent books available on the subject including some wonderful cookery books!
Steering Group
This is part of the requirements for Diocesan status and a group has already been established. It will carry out annual reviews of commitments made by individual churches and provide help and encouragement tothem.
