Church Urban Fund
Church in Society supports The Church Urban Fund, a not-for-profit organisation working with the Church of England to serve the poorest communities in England. For further information contact Hilary Lavis.
The Church Urban Fund has launched its Prayers for Lent 2009 calendar and is asking people to help make a real change in some of the poorest communities in England.
For each week of Lent the calendar contains prayers of the people involved in some of these projects. Reading them will give you the chance to catch a glimpse of their desire to see justice and change through faith in their local communities.
Prayers for Lent 2009 aims to enhance the work of The Church Urban Fund. Individuals, churches, Sunday schools and other groups can all find ways to get involved whether by making a donation, completing the activities or using the calendar to pray.
For 21 years, Church Urban Fund has been supporting churches to put their faith into action. Since its launch 21 years ago, Church Urban Fund has invested nearly £65,000,000 of funding in local faith-based projects in the poorest areas of England.
In this diocese, Church Urban Fund is helping support the Orton Goldhay Community Centre. This project is in a deprived area of Peterborough, and runs coffee mornings for people aged over-55, a ‘mums and tots’ group, and lunch clubs for children and parents.
Following a refurbishment, Church Urban Fund has given money towards the cost of a new fridge and freezer for the kitchen, and a washing machine and tumble drier for the utility room – much needed in the community as many people do not have their own.
Prayers for Lent 2009 will help Church Urban Fund to support more projects across the country. To find out more or to order Prayers for Lent 2009 calendars and resources, go to www.cuf.org.uk/lent09 or call 020 7898 1667.
