Towards Better Practice Nights - Call for Contributions

Satruday 18 October 2003, instead of an Association Training Day, the aim is to hold a "conference" or "workshop" at which we can ALL work on issues which affect the quality of our every day ringing. The bedrock of our ringing is practice nights, and the king pins in those are the tower captains. Nevertheless, without the mass of "ordinary" ringers, there would be no practices for the tower captains to run. We all can and should contribute to the success of practice nights.

Some are born to greatness, some aspire to greatness, and some have it thrust on them. Whatever the reasons, there is an enormous variety in the way in which practice nights are run. This is not simply a split between good and bad, either with respect to tower captains or practice nights. Even the best tower captains can learn new ideas from others, but are very often those with least time to go to other practices. Tower captains can also learn a lot from their charges - but many are diffident about offering advice. This is an opportunity to share best practice, as seen from all perspectives in the band.

So, I am looking for people (and not just Tower Captains) to share ideas on:

  • Recruitment
  • Teaching methods
  • Maintaining progress
  • Encouraging support from visitors
  • Running practices
  • In short, anything which contributes to a vibrant and rewarding practice night, that everyone will want to come back to

The plan for the day is to have some short presentations - some "stand up & talk", some a bit more practical or theatrical, with open (but 'managed') discussion to follow each. My hope is that this will not just be a talking shop for Tower Captains. The 'users'' viewpoint is at least as important. Furthermore, who knows when greatness may be thrust upon you ?

So far I am anticipating presentations on the following, but would welcome other offers:

  • The art of standing behind
  • Simulators - toys or essential?
  • It only takes three to tango - getting the most out of small numbers
  • Life on the receiving end - a student's perspective

Please send ideas and offers to: Richard Pargeter.
