Archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech
The Ven Hugh McCurdy
The Venerable Hugh McCurdy became Archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech in 2005. Hugh served in the Diocese of Ely as Vicar of Histon from 1991 until 2005 and was ordained in the Diocese of Guildford in 1985.
In 1994 he was appointed Rural Dean of Stowe and four years later also became Priest-in-charge of Impington. He was made an Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral in 2004.
As an Archdeacon he has responsibility for the care of the clergy and church communities in the north and west of the diocese. He is occupied in practical and legal matters such as parish boundaries, diocesan finance, clergy housing, reordering of church interiors- his approach to this aspect of the work is based on his experience as a parish priest. He is Acting Director of Mission, chairs the Communications Reference Group and the Mission Advisory Group.
In 2010 he was elected to General Synod.
Hugh is married to Ruth, previously a Senior Probation Officer who now works as Senior Strategy Adviser for the Youth Justice Board. They have three children.
Hugh was born in Guildford, Surrey, in 1958. He was educated at George Abbott Secondary School, Guildford. Following an Economics Degree, he undertook theological training at Trinity College Bristol which included a PGCE at Cardiff University.
He served his first curacy at St John’s Church, Egham, Surrey; from there he moved to St John’s Church, Woking, where he was responsible for a newly formed church “plant”. Some members of a thriving neighbouring congregation relocated to work with him in this mission context.
Before leaving Histon and Impington he had been chair of governors at Histon Infants School for ten years and Chaplain to the Histon Branch of the Royal British Legion.
In addition to his Diocesan work Hugh is involved in a number of other organisations. He is a Member of the Council of Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge. He serves on the Council of Reference for the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS). He is a school Governor at Wisbech Grammar School. He is a trustee of Cambridgeshire ACRE.
His professional interests include Church growth, evangelism, and relating the faith to the local community. His social interests include travel, theatre, cinema, cycling, cooking, eating out and reading.
