About This Site

Website and interactive diary

These pages are, with the approval of the Bishop, the official pages of the Diocese of Ely. However, except where explicitly noted, any opinions are those of the author(s), and not necessarily those of the Diocese or its officials.

The diocesan Website Group sets and implements the policy for the development of these pages. It is in turn responsible to the diocesan Communications Committee.

We hope these pages will serve to:

  • Help people who discover this website in their search for information about the Church, whether about Christianity in general, or more specifically about the Church in this area.
  • Support clergy and others who are working for the diocese, for instance churchwardens, licensed lay ministers, parish treasurers and secretaries, who wish to find out about diocesan policies, news and other information.
  • Enable the diocese to disseminate its own information among all its people; making pastoral, evangelistic and administrative material available as widely and as quickly as possible.
  • Inform regular churchgoing people about the latest events and initiatives in the Diocese.
  • Bring together people in the Diocese who are already on-line and provide a user-friendly website for all.
  • Provide professional communicators, such as journalists, with up-to-date and useful articles, background information, press releases, pictures and other images which describe the life and work of this Diocese.

Please help us by reading and replying to our feedback page. Thank you.

How this website has grown and developed

The Diocese of Ely was an early user of the internet, and its first website went live in July 1995. It was probably the very first English diocese to have a website, and one of the first two or three around the world. The website was designed and used to be managed by local volunteer computer enthusiasts, including Simon Kershaw, Tom Ambrose and Alan Jesson. At first, the updating and addition of new pages was mainly centralised and in the hands of a few people.

In 2005 the website was completely reconstructed and designed by a professional company under the leadership of the former Director of Communications, Owen Spencer-Thomas, who wrote and edited much of the present written material.

Today most of the updating and revision is undertaken by diocesan staff and officers who are individually responsible for particular areas of our activities. If you think your work in the diocese should feature on this site, please get in touch with us.
